Educational research has undergone significant transformation over recent decades, influenced by evolving societal demands, policy priorities, theoretical advances, and rapid technological change. Within this shifting landscape, learning studies have expanded beyond traditional classroom-focused inquiry to encompass interdisciplinary perspectives, diverse methodologies, and varied learning contexts. This critical review examines the development of educational research with a particular focus on how learning studies are being reconceptualized in response to contemporary educational challenges. Drawing on a broad body of international literature, the review traces the evolution of learning theories from behaviourist and cognitive models to constructivist, sociocultural, and critical perspectives. It highlights a growing recognition of learning as a socially situated, culturally mediated, and ethically influenced process rather than a purely individual cognitive activity. The review also examines key methodological developments, including the increased use of qualitative and mixed-methods research, design-based research, and large-scale evidence synthesis, while critically addressing ongoing concerns related to rigor, ethics, and research relevance. Major thematic areas in learning studies are synthesized, including problem-based learning, assessment and feedback practices, teacher professional development, and digitally mediated learning environments. Issues of equity, inclusion, and global diversity are foregrounded, with particular attention to the limitations of Western-centric research paradigms. The review argues that reframing learning studies requires greater interdisciplinarity, contextual sensitivity, and stronger alignment between research, policy, and practice. It concludes by outlining future directions aimed at enhancing the coherence, inclusivity, and societal impact of educational research.
