Abstract

Contemporary educational research has evolved significantly in response to rapid social, technological, and economic transformations across the globe. This systematic review examines the dominant trends and persistent challenges shaping educational research in the twenty-first century, with particular attention to methodological innovation, digital integration, equity concerns, and policy relevance. Drawing on peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and international reports published over the last two decades, this review synthesizes existing literature to identify how educational research agendas have shifted from traditional, classroom-centered inquiries toward interdisciplinary, data-driven, and context-sensitive approaches. The review highlights the increasing use of mixed-methods research, learning analytics, artificial intelligence, and large-scale international assessments as defining trends in contemporary scholarship. At the same time, it critically examines enduring challenges such as methodological rigor, ethical considerations, research-practice gaps, contextual transferability, and inequalities in knowledge production between the Global North and Global South. The findings suggest that while educational research has become more innovative and globally connected, it continues to face tensions between theoretical advancement and practical applicability. This review contributes to the field by offering a structured synthesis of current developments and by outlining future research directions that emphasize inclusivity, ethical responsibility, and stronger collaboration between researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. By systematically analyzing trends and challenges, the study aims to support scholars, educators, and decision-makers in understanding the evolving landscape of educational research and in shaping more impactful and sustainable research practices.
