Abstract

Neurodiversity, a term emerging from the disability rights movement, reframes neurological differences such as autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, and dyspraxia not as deficits but as natural variations in human cognition. This paradigm shift has profound implications for educational practice, requiring systemic change in pedagogy, assessment, classroom design, and policy frameworks. This review critically examines the current landscape of inclusive education through the lens of neurodiversity. It investigates how schools and universities are adapting to accommodate neurodivergent learners through Universal Design for Learning (UDL), differentiated instruction, assistive technologies, and flexible learning environments. Furthermore, the paper explores how social-emotional learning (SEL), peer support programs, and co-teaching models contribute to the inclusion of neurodivergent students in mainstream educational settings. The role of policy is analyzed, particularly the integration of neurodiversity into equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) strategies at institutional and governmental levels. Additionally, the review highlights emerging approaches in higher education, emphasizing compassionate pedagogy and sensory-aware environments, and discusses the implications of cutting-edge technologies such as AI and VR for enhancing access and engagement. By synthesizing global research and policy developments, this review provides actionable recommendations for educators, administrators, and policymakers to foster inclusive, strength-based learning cultures. The findings underscore the need for comprehensive teacher training, the redesign of learning spaces, the elevation of student voice, and a continued shift from deficit to difference models of learning. Ultimately, embracing neurodiversity in education is not merely a special educational concern but a critical component of educational equity and innovation.
